Robert Medak’s Review of: Stir, Laugh, Repeat: Finding Joy While Playing in the Kitchen Author Martha A. Cheves This is not your ordinary cookbook. This cookbook, written for those that are not familiar with working in a kitchen; or did not have the luxury of being in the kitchen with their mother; grandmother, or even their father and learned the joy of cooking from them while spending time in the kitchen. The recipes are simple comfort food and some that you may not have heard of. The point is to try them and learn to become comfortable in the kitchen and possibly pass on the joy of cooking to your children. There is no better way to spend time and have fun with your children then to work together in the kitchen as many children did years ago. The anecdotes along with the recipes are fun to read on their own. What a treat to read while following the easy to prepare dishes in one pot. The recipes are easy to follow and create something special for one or a family. This reviewer, thought back to the times he spent in the kitchen helping his mother by cutting up things, getting them ready for the pot. It does make for a special bond between child and parent. For those that are single and avoid the kitchen due to lack of confidence around a stove, think of the sense of accomplishment when you create something yourself in the kitchen. We can’t live by take-out or the microwave all the time. We should strive to eat healthy most of the time. This reviewer enjoyed Stir, Laugh, Repeat and awards it a five star rating.

Stir, Laugh, Repeat review by W. S. Gager

Yet another great review for my cookbook Stir, Laugh, Repeat that I wanted to share with everyone. Over the holidays I read Stir, Laugh, Repeat, Finding Joy While Playing in the Kitchen by Martha A. Cheves. I must admit I have never in my life read a cook book from cover to cover but this is much more than a cookbook, but a way of making people happy (and wanting to make them eat.) Not only is it filled with recipes that use ingredients that are staples in most kitchens or better yet leftovers, the recipes are in small quantities for couples or singles. That is where most cookbooks would stop. (Did I mention you will want to eat?) Martha goes on to provide antidotes about her cooking, the trial and error that went into each recipe and information on her tasters. Those anecdotes kept me reading as did the marvelous tips after each recipe. Some I knew, some I didn’t, but they are all gems to help the newer cooks and well versed cooks on the menu. Martha is a southern belle and it is clear in many of her recipes from Boiled Peanuts to Collards. She also loves cooking and experimenting which is why many of her recipes offer the key ingredient to any cooking – love. Pick up Martha’s Stir, Laugh, Repeat and there is something in there for everyone who spends any time in a kitchen or family. W. S. Gager

The Rebecca Review – Rebecca Johnson

Another review from One of the Amazon Book Reviewers – Rebecca Johnson is one of their top 10 Amazon reviewers. She even rated Stir, Laugh, Repeat with 5 stars! Yes I’m proud of this and wanted to share! Potato Soup and Mushroom Bread , October 28, 2009 By Rebecca Johnson “SeasonedwithLove.com” (Washington State) – See all my reviews “Potato soup is one of my favorite soups. I worked on this recipe for about three months. I know my tasters were getting tired of it by the time I finally found the right combination. But now, everyone that has tried it keeps asking when I’m going to make more.” ~ pg. 46 “Stir, Laugh, Repeat” is filled with tasty recipes that are easy to make. I made the Potato Soup and Mushroom Bread. I’d suggest that before you make the Mushroom Bread you put foil on the baking sheet. I didn’t and lived to tell about it because the cheese gets baked onto the sheet. This is however a bread that is delicious and scented up the entire kitchen. My husband accused me of eating it all. Well I had it for breakfast, lunch and dinner and he just had it for dinner. I’d make one suggestion for the recipe – toss the garlic with the mushrooms and olive oil. If you use a garlic press like I do it will be almost impossible to “sprinkle” garlic on the bread. The recipe I tried tonight was the Potato Soup. It is very easy to make and would be perfect as a first course to a dinner menu. It calls for six medium potatoes and I guessed correctly that this would be about 2 ¼ pounds unpeeled potatoes. The recipe calls for cheese so I assumed it was for cheddar cheese. Also I couldn’t find any canned Portobella mushrooms so I just used button mushrooms. There is no need to cook up bacon if you just use Bacon Bits. While the recipe calls for salt and pepper to taste I found that it needed 3 teaspoons of Lawry’s seasoning salt and lots of freshly ground pepper

Stir, Laugh, Repeat Review

I’m so tickled with this review for my cookbook Stir, Laugh, Repeat that I had to share with everyone. This was written by one of Amazon’s top reviewers. The recipes in this book are the treasured kind of American home cooking you find in regional church cookbooks. (Artichoke chicken, fried pickles, chikin’n'dumplins, chicken-fried beef tips.) Note; not diet food. But these are great for covered-dish events or when nothing but “mommy-food” will soothe your jagged nerves. The humor is genuine, the anecdotes are fun (my fave, using horse corn to make creamed corn.) This book could be your secret recipe horde to impress the potluck crowd. Joanna Daneman

Butternut Cake

Some of you may already know that I do book reviews. Friday I received a cookbook to review from Country Bob’s, Inc. which makes Country Bob’s All Purpose Sauce. I wanted to share my review for their cookbook with all of you. The cookbook is great and the recipe below is wonderful. I’m including a picture of a slice of my cake using their recipe. Butternut Cake 1 cup vegetable shortening 2 cups sugar 4 eggs 2 cups self-rising flour 1 cup milk 1 Tbl. vanilla butternut flavoring oz. cream cheese, softened 1/2 cup (1 stick) margarine, softened 1 pkg. (1 lb.) confectioners’ sugar 1 tbl. vanilla butternut flavoring 1 cup chopped nuts Cream the shortening and sugar in a mixing bowl until light and fluffy. Add the eggs and beat until well mixed. Add the self-rising flour and milk alternately, beating well after each addition. Beat in 1 Tbl. flavoring. Pour the batter into 3 greased and floured 9″ cake pans. Bake at 350 degrees until the layers test done. Cool in the pans on wire racks for about 10 minutes. Remove from pans and cool completely on wire wracks. Beat cream cheese and margarine in a mixing bowl until well blended. Add confectioners’ sugar gradually, beating until of spreading consistency. Beat in 1 Tbl. flavoring. Add the nuts and stir until well mixed. Spread between the layers and over the top and side of the cake. Yields 12 – 16 servings. Country Bob’s Cookbook – Review by Martha A. Cheves, Author of Stir, Laugh, Repeat The above is just a sample of the delicious recipes included in this book. You’ll find recipes for everything from Wingettes to Country Bob’s Chip Dip in the Appetizer section. There is Sour Cream Slaw Dressing and Cucumber and Tomato Salad in the Salad section. And Foil-Wrapped Chicken and Grilled Chicken-in-a-Pocket in the grilling section. Most of the dishes are made using Country Bob’s All Purpose Sauce, which I’ve used and love. The flavor blends of this sauce adds the perfect touch to anything from baked beans to meatloaf. And I can’t wait to try their recipe for Country Bob’s Steak Taco in the main dish section. I made the above cake and have to admit that I did make 3 changes. I used butter instead of the margarine and I used black walnut flavoring instead of the butternut. My reasons? I always bake with butter and I had no butternut flavoring so I substituted using the black walnut. My only other change was that I baked mine in a tube pan instead of 3 cake pans. Again, my reason? I just like to bake cakes in tube pans. But I still ended

Stir, Laugh, Repeat – Book Review by Eileen Thornton – UK

Yes, I have to pass on my book reviews. This one just came in from Eileen Thornton in the UK. Stir, Laugh, Repeat Finding Joy While Playing in the Kitchen By Martha A Cheves Publisher: Tate Publishing & Enterprises ISBN: 978-60462-818-0 I found this to be a most enjoyable cookery book. Not only are the recipes delicious, but also they are so very easy to follow and I love the stories that appear at the end of each recipe. One of the things that appealed to me was that Martha uses basic ingredients, the kind you would find in your store cupboard at home. There is no need for a trip to the high-class food stores to find some exotic ingredient for a special recipe that you know you will never use again. Yet the end result is just as delicious as anything you might have spent hours working over a hot stove for. Also Martha rounds off each recipe with a Tip. Sometimes the tips are about the preceding recipe, while others are there simply for good measure. Either way, they are both useful and sensible and made me wonder ‘why on earth didn’t I think of that?’ This is a cookery book I will refer to over and over again.
